Query: Hi, I live in UK, and I am Muslim Egyptian woman. A British man wants to marry me and is ready to convert for me. I gave him a translated Quran to read. I just wonder what should I do? and if he will convert what is expected from him?

Answer

If the man converted, there’s no reason not to marry him in terms of sharia but I advise you not to rush into this marriage until you make sure that he now firmly believes in Islam and all the misconceptions he had are now fully corrected.

The matter of doctrine is great and it’s not easily internalized. Guide him to the Islamic centers and their imams there. When he feels that Islam is in his heart, all what he should do to embrace Islam is to pronouncing shahada.

As for Ghusul (washing up), it’s preferable for whoever converts rather than an obligation. Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “He who professes La ilaha illallah (There is no true god except Allah), and denies of everything which the people worship besides Allah, his property and blood become inviolable, and it is for Allah to call him to account”. [Muslim].

Then, he performs the rest of the five pillars of Islam; prayer, fasting, zakat, pilgrimage, just like all other Muslims. And Allah knows best.
