Is Animations and Cartoon Drawings Allowed in Islam?

Query: Assalamu aleykum. I will In Sha Allah go to a film production college. I have talked about many issues with a scholar like cutting audio files and maybe filming something which is not compatible with Sharia. We had a long discussion and he came to the conclusion that the good will outweigh the bad, because afterwards I will try to make films which could benefit the Ummah.

However, I am not clear on one issue. When a film is produced and the script is done, than a storyboard has to be made. It is basically a grid in which every scene for the movie has to be sketched. Almost like a comic.

Now this will not be hanging somewhere on a wall, it is used at the set and can be destroyed after the movie is finished. But I am concerned because of the hadith of the Prophet, PBUH, «Those who will be most severely punished by Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be the image-makers».

Many of the Ulema have stated that making pictures is totally prohibited.

My second question is about computer animations. Is the ruling the same?

Answer

It’s permissible to use filming and drawings in children TV shows or programs (animation movies) and others as long as Islamic rules and traditions are observed. It’s okay to use all types of picturing whether multidimensional or others; such as the ones used at the puppet shows.

“When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) arrived after the expedition to Tabuk or Kaybar, the draught raised an end of a curtain which was hung in front of her store-room, revealing some dolls which belonged to her. He asked: what is this? She replied: My dolls. Among them he saw a horse with wings made of rags, and asked: what is this I see among them? She replied: a horse. He asked: what is this that it has on it? She replied: two wings. He asked: a horse with two wings? She replied: Have you not heard that Solomon had horses with wings? She said: Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) laughed so heartily that I could see his molar teeth”.
