Is it permissible to give gift boxes in Ramadan

Ramadan gifts

There is nothing wrong with giving gift boxes to your brothers on the occasion of the arrival of the Month of Ramadan, because Ramadan is a month of goodness (khayr), giving, charity, benevolence, mercy, cheerfulness, obedience, devotion, etc.

Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbas who said: {Allah’s Messenger was the most generous of people in regard to goodness (khayr), and he was as generous as possible in Ramadan. Jibril used to meet him every night in Ramadan and the Prophet would go over the Qur’an with him. When Jibril would meet him, he would be more generous in regard to goodness (khayr) than the wind which blows freely.}. The scholars say concerning the meaning of “goodness” (khayr) in this hadith: [it is a name that encompasses all that is beneficial]. There is no doubt that giving gifts and presents is included in this meaning.

This is in addition to what giving gifts and presents contains as regards instilling and spreading love and removing hatred and resentment, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: {Give gifts to one another and you will love one another} (Narrated by al-Bukhari in al-Mufrad al-Adab, by Ahmad, and others).

The learned scholar, al-munawi (may Allah have mercy on him) says in al-Taysir Bi-Sharh al-Jami ‘al-Saghir: [ … that is because a gift unifies hearts and negates the hatred and resentment harboured in chests], and Allah knows best.

Conclusion

There is nothing wrong with giving gift boxes to your brothers on the occasion of the arrival of the Month of Ramadan, because Ramadan is a month of goodness (khayr), giving, charity, benevolence, mercy, cheerfulness, obedience, devotion, etc. Also, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) displayed these qualities in the month of Ramadan more than in other months, even though these were his qualities al year long.

There is no doubt that giving gifts and presents is included in this meaning of “goodness” (khayr) mentioned in the above hadith about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) being most generous in regard to goodness in Ramadan. This is in addition to what giving gifts and presents contains as regards instilling and spreading love and removing hatred and resentment, and Allah knows best.
