Sound Echo Alongside With Respect

Respect

A Smile of Hope today is about only one word. The word is “Respect”. Let me tell you the story. In 1964 the construction of the High Dam began. There was an engineer at that time, named Hamdy Afeefy. Hamdy Afeefy graduated from Engineering School and got a scholarship to study in Germany to complete his engineering education. He spent 4 years, and he was returning back to continue work in the High Dam. The one who was telling me this story is his granddaughter, named Nour.

Nour said, “When my grandfather went there to study, he got to know a German young lady. He loved her so much, and he wanted to marry her. After he finished studying, he had to go to Egypt. It was a point of change in the life of the lady. The option was she would come back to Egypt and live in Aswan, or live in Germany. She chose to go to Egypt, and to be next to him in Aswan. It was the strength for a very strong relationship that lasted for 55 years.” Nour said, “I asked my grandmother, what is the secret behind the success in your marriage?”

Her grandmother responded to her with just one word, which I am dedicating to all the married people, it is “Respect.” I am not just dedicating this to husbands and wives; I am dedicating this to the entire country. “Respect.” It’s the foundation of houses. No, it’s not just the foundation of houses, but it’s the foundation of life in its entirety The young lady, Nour, told her grandmother, “Please explain to me a little bit more. What do you mean by respect?”

Her grandmother said, “Let me tell you a story. Once at the beginning of our marriage, your grandfather yelled and screamed at me loudly. I was honestly wrong for what I did. I apologized to him, however, he didn’t accept my apology and he continued yelling at me. I went to him and told him, “listen; our house was built on a foundation of respect from you to me, and from me to you We aren’t supposed to yell at each other in a loud manner, or curse each other. There’s a great amount of respect between us.” I t en to d him a story.” Nour responded, “What story did you tell him?”

The grandmother responded, “Once a boy was taken by his father to a place between mountains. It has a deep valley within it, so there’s a great echo there. The little boy didn’t know what echo was. His father took him, and entered in the middle of the place. The little boy started climbing the mountain, and then he started feeling tired so he said “Ouuuucchh”, and he heard his echo as “Ouuucchhh”. So the little boy thought there was someone else in the vicinity. He said, “Who are you?” The father was standing there and laughing, because the boy didn’t realize that this was his echo. The echo responded, “Who are you?” The little boy told him “I’m asking you, who are you?” The echo responded, “I’m asking you, who are you?” The little boy got angry and said, “You are a coward.” The echo responded back saying, “You are a coward.”

The father stopped him, and said to him, “Instead of saying that, tell him I respect you.” The boy said, “I respect you.” The echo responded, “I respect you.” His father responded to him and said, “People treat one another like this. It’s as if life does not give you except at the same amount that you give it. Whatever you say, you’ll get it back in the echo. Life doesn’t respect you, except as much as you respect yourself.”

Sometimes the echo can take years to come back and be heard. You can be kind to an old man, and when you get older, people will be kind to you. You treat your mother and father nicely, and when you grow older your children will treat you nicely. The echo extends in all of our lives.

The echo says respect is the one thing that remains. Respect is important husbands and wives. Respect is what we need in our houses. Respect is what we need in our country.

Truly then will there be a smile of hope.
