Sorry for long post.
I was taking care of my mother that was suffering from dementia.
Then , Due to a serious injury During Covid, my self-employed business was drastically reduced and currently I don’t have the energy to work on a full time basis because of the accident.
I broke my femur in three places , broke my hip and my shoulder was crushed in four places , this is very long-term recovery process. but I’m much better , however I do need two more surgeries.
My mother passed away, and that was my only reliable source of income.
I am now forced to take early Social Security in November.
My plan was to work from home and or,rent a room , Uber , Lyft, etc . and collect Social Security.
I’ve been applying for work at home jobs, and other jobs to no avail. Room rental is sketchy, but not giving up on it. Trying to sell household items , furniture etc. Not much luck with that , I think lots of people on vacation now.
Meanwhile, I am behind in mortgage payments and it’s just me . I’ve lived in my home for 23 years . This accident and Covid have turned my life upside down.
Any advice would be appreciated. I know my situation is similar to other single ladies in my age range , and yes, I live in florida of course.
JulieAs opposed to taking SS early, how about trying to apply for SS disability due to your injuries?
If you win, it is paid at or near what you would have received at full retirement.
GloriaHave you considered saling your home to a investment company? Alot if folks I hear have done it . They buy your home as is. And your cutting out the middle man. Such as agent. Closing cost. Etc
StephanieI agree with everybody else. Rent the available rooms in your home.
Even your master bedroom to traveling nurses or if you live near a school grad students. Do it fast, get listed fast, so you can get that mortgage paid period if you can do it.
Go fund me for all your injuries and the mortgage. do not be shy to ask your community for help.
Don’t miss: Tips and tricks for paying down a mortgage quickly?
JeanneI would look at getting a renter. Like a traveling nurse. Also, yu can ask for references for a renter.
DebraMy parents did a reverse mortgage. It’s not for everyone but it sure has helped them.
They’re in their 80’s and all they pay are the taxes and upkeep. It really is a blessing to them.
I pray you find a solution so you can concentrate on healing your body.
JeanneSending prayers so that everything works out for you.
JenniferCan you babysit older children after school?
You will not need to lift or hold school age kids and would basically give them a snack and oversee homework or playing in your yard or home. Childcare pays relatively well.
Also, consider becoming a child care provider for 3rd shift parents who need childcare overnight.
Again, if it’s a child 5+ you should not need to lift or hold the child. They would sleep in your home and either get picked up by the school bus in the morning or by their parent.
Best of luck to you.
As someone with multiple autoimmune disorders that hit me in my late 40’s, my greatest fear is no longer being able to work. At 52 I work 2 jobs in order to keep my house and afford to live.
Explore these too: If I recast the mortgage but continue to make the same payment would it speed the repayment?
ZiannaDepartment of Social Services does emergency mortgage and utilities assistance. Also look into “homeless prevention” programs.
Good luck.
DaphneIf I were to rent a room, then I would only rent to traveling nurses. Having a full time person could create more problems than you want.
Also, call your mortgage company and try to work something out so, you don’t go into foreclosure.
Maybe think about a reverse mortgage with a RELIABLE company.
WendyNot to pry into info that you didn’t share, but..
Was this accident covered by some sort of insurance (workman’s comp, car accident, home accident) Where you may be eligible for missed income through the insurance?
TamsinWhat about if you rented out your whole house for a period of time and you rented a room somewhere? You would need to clear out a lot of your stuff but the neighbourhood you describe may yield a decent income.
You would need insurance to do this but may work out really well for the short / medium term for you.
DrewIf you live near a university rent your unused bedrooms a to grad student or TA’s.
You can get $800+/month per room per semester.
You would rent for 10 months out of 12 so you get a break from having renters for a few months.
CarolynWhat is your age? Is it possible to take a part time job and draw social security? Have you spoken to your mortgage company? Are you able to sell the house and live in a 55 and older hud community? Can you refinance? You want to sell before you are foreclosed on if you can’t make arrangements with the mortgage company. If you sell then pay cash for something else even if you have to move out a little. Did your mom have life insurance that could cover everything till you get your first check?
