That’s what my family does. We are a one car (EV) household and sold our SUV. My wife has to commute by car every day and I commute by bike every day. We will rent a car when needed, which has so far been only once in the past 6 months for my wife to get back from the airport while I was at work.

Always check rates even though I have a super fuel efficient microcar. Sometimes a rental is less than $20/day. During the pandemic I got a 1 way 3 day rental for $56.

My vehicles are both 2007s. Both have over 160k. Small car is daily and truck for hauling. I mantain them myself. When we go on vacation we get a rental.

The cost to rent is less than price of 1 monthly payment. (Usually get a large SUV) If you have issues you just call the rental company and they bring you another one.

Haven’t had a car payment in over a decade. It works well for me.

This is what I do. I would note rentals are subject to current market rates. They tend to spike in August when I like to travel. Also holiday weekends are expensive. If you like travelling off season it’s actually pretty cheap. Figure out all the rewards programs. I’m partial to my local Enterprise and Costco’s car rental program.

I often drive 1,000 plus miles and I like having something reliable and I don’t want that many miles on my car. Especially during COVID I was terrified at the idea of having to buy another car. Prices have come down a little so the idea of periodically just buying a different used car isn’t a terrible idea anymore.
