
Indian Independence Day is a very special day in the history in general and especially in the history of India. India celebrate Indian Independence Day on 15 August every year (NOW 2020). It’s a remarkable day because India celebrates the end of the British rule.
The history of Indian Independence Day
15 August 1947 represents the freedom of India because it is the day when India became independent nation and at the same time, it represents the anniversary of the partition of the subcontinent into two countries, India and Pakistan.
The British rule started in 1757 when the English East India Company started to control over the country after the British victor at the Battle of Plassey. The East India Company controlled India for 100 years until the British Crown received the mission in the wake of the Indian Mutiny in 1857 and in 1858.
The beginning of the movement was during World War 1 and the leader of these movement was Mohandas K. Gandhi. He defended for a peaceful and nonviolent end to the British Rule.
On that day, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of Independent India hoisted the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi.
Indian Independence Day is marked through India with flag raiding ceremonies and the singing of the Indian national anthem.
Celebration of the Indian Independence Day
The question now is how people celebrate Indian Independence Day?
First, it’s a public holiday. In that day National, state and local government offices, post offices and banks are closed. Stores and other business and organization may be closed or reduced opening hours.
Second, Landmarks and government buildings are lit up in the national colors of the country. People also decorate shops, malls and houses in the same color. The shopkeepers sell flags and kites for that day.
And of course, the TV Channels fills with Documentaries, patriotic films and programs related to freedom of India to get people into the spirit of Independence Day.
They made many of cultural programs in the state capitals. But at the beginning the prime minister participates in the flag raising ceremony at the Red Fort historic monument in Old Delhi and holds a speech. Then they ensues a parade with members of the armed forces and police.
Then the prime minister delivers a televised address to the country, recounting the major accomplishments of India during the previous year and outlining future challenges and goals. One of the most important tradition is flying kite with various sizes, shapes and colors. The kites fills the sky in that day.
Many people spend the day with their families and friends. They go for a picnic in a park or garden or they go to film and eat their meal at home or restaurant. Many people also flies the kites and listen to patriotic songs.
Although the public transport isn’t affected by the holiday but you have to take care that the traffic might be heavy.
